BORIS ‘boris at last – feedbacker –‘ LP review on TOKAFI

Sound, Drones and Rock n Roll: An unexpectedly positive noise-symphony.

Most likely because of their love for noise, distortion and feedback, Japanese Trio Boris have sometimes been classified as Post-Metal-deconstructionist. In fact, the exact opposite is true. Turning the amplifier into the focal point of their sound, the band may actually represent the original spirit of Sound, Drones and Rock n Roll more faithful than most of their peers. In an age, when Rock has turned into an economic vertical ruled by rational logic, their take on the genre is as reinvigorating as it is, in an admittedly twisted way, pure. Even the outward hubris of a release like „Feedbacker“ signals, if anything, a return to the core values of the genre and to a time when musicians would try and expand the borders of music rather than cater to a bourgeois need for weekendly simulations of revolution: Composed of a single, fourtythree-minute composition characterised as a „symphony“ in the press release and comprising a host of different movements and styles, it defies the law of gravity by proudly revolving around its own axis.

At the time „Feedbacker“ was first published as a co-production between their own, bizarrely titled, Fangs Anal Satan imprint and Conspiracy Records in 2003, Boris were still more of a small cult-band which had managed to secure one-off releases with fledgling label Southern Lord. The album would, however, quickly cement their name as one of the first harbingers of the surge of a new wave of Noise-Rock-bands to whom the sound, physical feeling and immersive qualities of Guitar-feedback meant everything, but the „evil“ aesthetics and distopian Weltanschauung of Metal were more of a gimmick than something to be truly taken seriously. Eight years on, it is not hard to discern what made them such an enticing proposition: Defying fixed terms like improvisation or song, the work drew from the unconscious rather than the subconscious, inventing itself with spell-binding imagination in each moment. It was in-your-face enough for slow-motion headbanging, yet complex enough to warrant repeat listens. Accessible enough to appeal to those in love with the quaffable groove and slacker-mentality of the Stoner-community, yet radical enough to qualify as experimental. And it combined a deep admiration for the classic cornerstones of distortion-worship with the passionate ambition of transcending them.

On the one hand, one could therefore simply perceive the record as a smoothly segued juxtaposition of five distinct tracks. On the other, it also makes sense to regard it as a creative continuum, bracketed by an opening solo-Guitar exercise drenched in warm, crunching frequencies and, a full three quarters of an hour later, a relaxed band-outro rising from the debris of the preceding onslaught like a drowsy phoenix from the ashes. Contained between these poles are a dreamily drifting space-section ingenuously slowed down by Drummer Atsuo's intricate half-time beat, raw, unholy powerchords and an almost funky groove-section, which sees frontman Takeshi contrasting elegant vocal lines with mysteriously metaphorical lyrics: „Must shoot at the season of the fangs that has forgotten to make a decision. Fragments have come together to become me. Millions of me, million ways of living.“ Just when you thought melody and hooks had taken over, Boris relentlessly send the entire piece through the shredder. Riffs are broken apart into their formants, licks smashed to pieces, Guitar- and Bass-lines stretched into chilling, frosty tones, as percussive patterns mutate into a grinding sequence of metallic hihats slowly fading away into darkness.

Boris have always placed seminal importance on communicating with their listeners as directly as possible, which is why live-gigs are probably still the place where their ideals shine through in their most precise and undiluted form. And yet, their studio-output is marked by the very same ideal of music constituting a two-sided exchange. By finding a balance between the textural sound-properties of their music and the notion of a journey marked by development, transition and transformation, „Feedbacker“ forces its audience to surrender to it completely. Sections brimming with beauty take turns with terrifyingly mangled din, wilfully burning whatever background wallpaper-qualities the album may have had, but this is anything but an act of destruction. In the act of listening, a bond is struck between listener and band, which can be taken for an invitation to share the inexplicable intensity of an experience regardless of what's ahead. Compared to the occasionally offputtingly mathematical permutations and calculated aggression of many of their peers, that is an unexpectedly positive message by all means.

Knut - Wonder preorders

The new Knut album 'Wonder' is now available for preordering! First vinyl pressing is limited to 1000 copies: 100 on gold, 200 on clear/red mixed and 700 on black. Releasedate for this record is 8/6 and all preorders will ship around that date!

Despite gaining a steady fan base and extensive media coverage over the almost two decade long adventure of their career as well as making it to the Swiss edition of Trivial Pursuit, Geneva-based quartet Knut (russian word for “whip”, pronounced “cnoot”) are still occasionally filed away in the popular Metalcore-drawer. On their fourth full-length the band are now setting the record straight.

Three years in the making and again culled from myriads of jam sessions, „Wonder“, released on Hydra Head in the USA and on Conspiracy Records in Europe, has turned out a monolithic album-statement between explosive Hardcore, Noise-Rock, Math-Metal and Psychedelia.

It's all about knowing exactly what works and what doesn't, finding a balance between order and chaos as well as pushing your limits while staying true to your roots.

Featuring notably more vocals than headline-grabbing predecessor „Terraformer“ and a more varied and refined production than classic „Challenger“, „Wonder“ has ended up a daring but entirely organic tightrope-walk between beguiling atmospherics and brutal aggression, short up-tempo miniatures and slow-grinding fuzz-epics, hoarsely screamed songs and drone-driven instrumental passages.

Staying true to Knut's claim that „over-intellectualizing harms the beauty of creation“, the occasionally complex and intriguingly convoluted structures of „Wonder“ feel very much as though they had been passionately churned out in a single, liberating explosion at Serge Morattel's RecStudio in Geneva (where “Challenger” was recorded back in 2001). 2006's Remix-album „Alter“, on which various producers from the realms of experimental Sound Art (JK Broadrick, KK Null, Dälek, Asmus Tietchens, etc) had transformed some of Knut's cuts beyond recognition, has certainly not rubbed off on the new material. Instead, electronics have turned into a trippy, but subtle layer in the equally dense and spacey sound of the formation. Add to that some of the group's most immediate riffing and the outcome is a hallucinogenic journey filled with astoundingly diverse references ranging from Death Metal to the delirious blend between blissful Ambient and crushing Doom displayed on anthemic closer „Daily Grind“.

Hypnotically switching between fearful intensity, dreamy interludes and massively stretched-out excursions, „Wonder“ moulds these influences into an absorbing, razor sharp and immersive experience. Knut have found their true voice after a trio of releases dedicated to carving out different aspects of their style. For a band who, at one point, felt they'd already said everything there was to say, that's a pretty powerful statement indeed.

This Thursday Master Musicians of Bukkake are playing a show at Trix in Antwerp together with Wooden Shjips. As you might know there currently is a huge dustcloud hanging over Europe which blocked all air traffic for several days, resulting in Yob, who played Roadburn last weekend, getting stuck here on the continent. The great folks of Trix and Heartbreaktunes decided to add them to the show this Thursday so Yob will play an aftershow right after Wooden Shjips.

Year Of No Light - Ausserwelt preorder

The Year of No Light 'Ausserwelt' preorder starts today. We have an exclusive preorder shirt available. Music Fear Satan will release the vinyl of the record and were so kind to offer us an exclusive brown 2xlp limited to 100 copies which will only be availble through our mailorder! Release date for this record is 26/4 and all preorders will ship around this date. Preorders on the shirt will end on 19/4 so please order before this date so we have the time to order the shirt.

Year of no Light spent most of the last 4 years spreading its enthralling psychedelic warfare to a continually growing audience. Alongside they parted ways with their singer (R.I.P) and recruited two other thirsty mercenaries. Shiran, of über-doom combo “Monarch!”, brings now his chthonian six strings to an already massive cathedral of noise and ambient drone tones. Mathieu, of deviant-electronics act “Aeroflot”, strengthens ritualistic tribal rhythm patterns.

Out of their cave, they secluded into an old theater to record these 4 tracks catching every possible vibration of the trembling frame of this enlivened a new mansion. All the energy collected at that very moment forms “Ausserwelt”, the sophomore album of Year of no Light. Mystical emanations flow out of these riffs colliding into each other to an in ear-splitting shriek. Cranked amps and molested drums hurl their mourning chant as a choir intoning its final psalms at the dawn of the Last Judgment. Year of no Light follows the path opened by “Nord” towards more somber psychedelics, creating its own blend of black metal, sludge, drone or any other influence marked with the seal of darkness.

Still no caps, no core neither stupid modern nihilism but instead an ambiguous electrical network of acting singularities, now ready to afford the collective metaphysical crash to come.

Nice FINAL / FEAR FALLS BURNING review from Aquarius

FINAL + FEAR FALLS BURNING s/t (Conspiracy)
We're surprised it took this long for these two avant guitarists to join forces, Final, aka Justin Broadrick, aka the man behind Godflesh, Jesu, Grey Machine, Techno Animal etc, and Fear Falls Burning, aka Dirk Serries. In some ways both have a similar approach to the guitar, both able to sculpt sprawling expanses of layered drone music, transforming six strings into something much more, a sound generator capable of conjuring heaving, roiling dronescapes as well as hushed ambient drifts.
The opening track seems more influenced by later period Broadrick, as it sounds a lot like a washed out, minimalized Jesu track, a slow, warm, lugubrious riff, looped over and over, poppy and melodic, but slowed down enough that it becomes trancelike, with Serries (we assume) adding a sky full of tangled and layered high end contrails, adding a dark tension, and a mysterious beauty to the melancholic main riff, the whole thing wreathed in a gauzy dreamlike production.
The second track is more static, less riff based, and more wide open, a blackened landscape of rumbling low end string buzz, and singing high end skree, the skree muted so instead of being piercing, it's more smoldering, a glowing buzz, that pulses and throbs, the guitars constantly shifting, the layers overlapping and intertwining, gorgeous but still tense and dramatic, easily could have been extended to fill up a whole record and we definitely would not have complained.
The flipside begins with a smokey bit of folk flecked darkness, that definitely reminds us of groups like Earth or Barn Owl, a tiny bit of twang, a subtle choral vibe, warm and washed out, melancholy and minor key, the guitar unfurling skeletal melodies that blossom lazily, and then seem to fade into the background, just in time for more to take their place, a subtly active twangscape of muted buzz and almost country sounding drones, again, drifting ghostlike through a sepia toned haze.
The record closes with a gorgeous, thick bit of dronemusic, the background a sitar like buzz gives the track a definite raga like vibe, while in the foreground, another guitar moans, unleashing warped low end melodic tangles, delivered in slow motion, mimicking the sound of a horn almost, a muted bleat, but pulled into strange alien melodies, mirrored by the ever shifting, and highly melodic background buzz. This one definitely could have been stretched out forever, absolutely mesmerizing, the sort of drone you never ever want to end.
Gorgeous packaging, a black on black sleeve, with a very subtle die cut, revealing yet more black from the sleeve within. LIMITED TO 500 COPIES.

Final+Fear Falls Burning review in German

Unruhr - Germany

Taiga - hsheal review

"One would perhaps have expected Bryant Clifford Meyer, Keyboarder of a-category-of-their-own Heavy-Post-Sludge Rockers Isis, to come up with a similar momentous in-your-face approach. Instead, „hsheal“, released under the taiga moniker, has turned out a zero-gravity, darkly ethereal Ambient album flourescing in the same impressionist watercolours bleeding into liquid forms on the record cover."

Red Sparowes

Los Angeles quintet Red Sparowes offers a preview of song snippets from its forthcoming epic, heavy and sprawling third album in a video trailer posted a couple of days ago. The disc, titled The Fear Is Excruciating, But Therein Lies The Answer will be released via Conspiracy Records in Europe and through Sargent House in the USA. There has never been as pronounced of a leap in style and scope as with Red Sparowes' latest offering. The Fear is Excruciating, But Therein Lies the Answer maintains their layered arrangements and swirling amplified crescendos, Americana noir soundscapes (punctuated by the extended pedal steel on “In Every Mind”), and gloriously triumphant melodies (“Giving Birth to Imagined Saviors”). Earlier records focused on the larger scope of the album, but the new album is song-centered, with the individual tracks harboring stronger independent identities. And where previous endeavors found the band propelled by enormous walls of sound, they now temper their monolithic progressions with distinct passages of separated and soft-spoken instrumentation. Red Sparowes were suspiciously absent from the playing field over the last three years, and now it’s apparent that they were busy drafting the grandest statement and finest achievement of their existence.

Keep an eye on our blog for more info about this release! We will also post an overview of all our upcoming releases somewhere next week!

Final+Fear Falls Burning review

The people at Norman Records really seem to like the Final+Fear Falls Burning record.

"Justin K. Broadrick (Final) and Dirk Serries (Fear Falls Burning) have only gone and made a bloody album together, haven't they? Final + Fear Falls Burning it's called. Epic guitar chugging and feedbacky atmospherics to the absolute max, yeah? What a dense beast this is.. Their dueling guitars are giving me the feeling that I'm lugging a wounded mammoth up an immense obelisk hanging over a bottomless canyon. Wearing a gauntlet. Quality stuff for lovers of oppressive, downery drone metal packed up in a luvverly die-cut sleeve. Edition of just the 500."

Black Boned Angel - the Witch Must Be Destroyed lp

The Black Boned Angel - the Witch Must Be Killed lp is now available for preordering here . We have clear green (ltd. 75), solid orange (ltd. 125) and black vinyl (ltd. 300) available. The clear green vinyl is limited to 1 per customer. All lp's come with a free mp3 coupon. The lp's will be shipped out from January 13nd on.

Builds on Black Boned Angels initial premise of 'do nothing, very loud, for a long time, better than other people'. Perhaps the best example thus far and in spite of the obviously extreme-metal reference points, these two 'songs' (yes, they ARE songs) come across as decidedly 'beautiful'. More than a passing nod to Judas Priest also.

Final+Fear Falls Burning - S/T lp preorder

The Final+Fear Falls Burning lp is now available for preordering here.

Dirk Serries (Fear Falls Burning) and Justin Broadrick (Final) are both musicians with an impressive discography that spans over 2 decades.
They both emerged from the same underground scene in the early eighties, releasing small print tape releases, often on the same labels. When they finally met for the first time in 2007 on a Jesu / Fear Falls Burning European tour they hit it on straight away.
Their common love and interest in the avant-garde drone, experimental music scene resulted in Final's stunning contribution to the epic 'Once We All Walk Through Solid Objects' 5lp set by Fear Falls Burning.

A full-length collaborative album was only a matter of time.

About a year in the making this collaborative album showcases Final and Fear Falls Burning's ability to expand the drone genre with allowing power chords, figurative plucking and electronic-esque soundscapes to lead the 4 songs on this album.
The collaboration is much more than just a sum of both their projects together but it realizes an entity on its own.

In your face, metal-esque and avant-garde at the same time, Final and Fear Falls Burning took the leap forward in creating a intriguing variation on drone music.

This lp is limited to 500 copies: 75 on clear, 125 on silver and 300 on black. The lp will be housed in a sleeve with varnish print & cut-out and will come with a coupon for a free mp3 download!

Apex Fest III

Gnaw are playing Apex Fest III in New York on November 13/14. Other bands playing include the Austerity Project, Uneartly Trance, Hecate and Aphelion.

Here are some press quotes and a liveclip from their show in New York a couple of weeks ago for those of you who are still unfamiliar with them.

"...the sound of abjection... a claustrophobic feel, pressing in on you relentlessly." - Signal To Noise

"For those who didn't have the patience to absorb Khanate (your loss), Gnaw's sound is abrasive, but relatively concise: The five-minute "Vacant" has a propulsive percussiveness that would go over well with fans of Industrial music..." - Pitchfork.com

"...an overwhelming monolith of uncompromising and malevolent nastiness." - Brainwashed.com

Boris - Feedbacker LP

We will be re-releasing Boris at Last - Feedbacker on vinyl on 20/10. 200 copies on limited red vinyl, the rest will all be pressed on black vinyl. Keep your eyes peeled for preorder deals. You can already add the item to your wishlist here.

A single 43-minute composition / symphony (broken into five tracks for easier access) from Japan's drone druids that goes from etheral to crushingly heavy and everything between. Stark in contrasts and attention to texture." Some bands are fly-by-night operations, garnering instant fame, critical acclaim and shattering all album sales expectations within their first couple years of operation. You've seen 'em before - they're certainly here today, everyone's darlings tomorrow, and merely relegated to curbside refuse service just before the end of the week. Boris is certainly not one of those spontaneous success stories. Though the thunderously heavy and melodic Japanese experimental rock outfit has only very recently been introduced to American ears - most notably via its groundbreaking 2006 release, Pink - the trio has been steadily grazing its unique sonic turf for well over the past decade. And the release of its latest full- length endeavor, Smile, will force the boundaries of Boris' already-expansive repertoire -which features nearly a dozen albums - into new extremes. This is the LP version of the cd released in 2005. A limited Picture Disc version on 333 copies was released at that time as well. - boris at last – feedbacker – is featured on the 2009 Motion Picture Soundtrack of ‘The Limits Of Control’ By Jim Jarmusch. - Boris is invited to ATP in NY this September (curated by THE FLAMING LIPS), where they will play Feedbacker in its entirety (for the very first time for years)- Lp comes with a huge poster!

Master Musicians Of Bukkake’s newest record and part of a Northwest trilogy, Marks an evolution from their first record “Visible Sign Of the Invisible order” (Abduction records 2005). MMOB has now solidified into a 7 piece cosmic psyche force. Like a reverse dark side of the New Age sound, on the Totem series Master Musicians of Bukkake perform ritualistic electric excursions into the outer and inner reaches. Relying more on the electric power of psyched guitars, analog synth chants, and exotic heavy percussion. Totem one echos with the delusions of a West Coast Death cult. Outer spaced Gamelan, dusty fuzz rock from celestial deserts, meditations of a deranged Krishna gathering, and the Blurry acoustic guitar majesty of The Cascade mountains all reveal themselves here in epic form On Totem One. Every sound and note played put to tape by a group with a singular purging purpose. Totem one also features Vocals By MMOB honorary member Alan Bishop of the Sun City Girls.
Totem One will be available early 2009 on Conspiracy records followed by EU and US touring from Master Musicians of Bukkake.
Totem Two will be released on Abduction records in mid 2009. Master Musicians of Bukkake began in the fertile music scene of the Pacific Northwest in 2003. Originally founded as a collective of musicians from the overflowing community in Seattle. In 2005 they released “Visible Sign Of the Invisible Order” a recording of improvised ritualistic musical gatherings by the collective. Recorded mostly outside deep in the Cascade Mountains and in large ensemble sessions at Aleph Studios. The record was released on the Sun City Girls Abduction record label and featured honored guest appearances by Alan Bishop and Charlie Gocher of the SCGirls.
